Nigeria's President Jonathan kicks off national schools Agriculture Project

President Goodluck Jonathan has flagged off the National schools Agriculture programme at a ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja
The President says the programme is to encourage youths build self reliance at an early age
State House Correspondent TAI AMODU reports that it is a grim fact that the Nigerian farming population is aging with not enough youths interested in taking on agriculture as a career
This programme is to promote agriculture among youths just the same way sports is being promoted in the country and simultaneously build a culture of self reliant entrepreneurship in students at an early age.

The National Schools Agriculture Programme will kick off as a pilot project in twelve secondary schools with four thousand youths expected to initially partake
The focus is to put agriculture in the hands of future leaders.

The President is however urging states to buy into programme if it is to succeed and he receives some assurances
As President Jonathan appends his signature to the official T-shirt to kick off the programme it is expected that decorated Agriculture ambassadors and mentors will take up the challenge of sustaining the programme going forward
